Travel Smart: Avoid Paying High Prices for Transportation at Airports

When it comes to airport transportation, it’s common to encounter inflated prices and taxi scams. However, with a bit of planning and savvy travel know-how, you can save money and avoid paying exorbitant prices. We’ll share practical tips and alternative options to help you navigate airport transportation without breaking the bank.

Anecdotal evidence

Punta Cana: 15 minute taxi ride from the airport to the resort at 3 pm = $30.

Cancun: 20 minute taxi ride from the airport to the resort at 2 pm = $45.

Los Angeles: 30 minute Uber ride from Los Angeles Airport to the hotel at 10 pm = $85.

Research Transportation Options in Advance

Before you arrive at your destination, research the available transportation options from the airport. Look for public transportation systems like buses, trains, or trams that connect the airport to the city center. Familiarize yourself with their schedules, routes, and ticket prices. Additionally, check if there are reliable ride-sharing services or app-based transportation options available in the area.

Many airports offer shuttle services or private transfers at fixed rates. Research and compare prices beforehand, and book through official airport websites or trusted booking platforms. Additionally, contact your hotel. This way, you can secure a reliable mode of transportation at a predetermined cost. In my recent trip to Miami, I was stuck for one day at the airport due to inclement weather. I contacted the hotel that I had recently booked and they sent a shuttle bus to pick me up.

Share Rides

If you’re traveling with fellow passengers or meet other travelers heading in the same direction, consider sharing a taxi or ride. This allows you to split the fare and reduce costs significantly. Look for ride-sharing options specifically designed for airport transfers, or simply approach other travelers and propose the idea of sharing transportation.

In my last trip to Medellin, I meet other passengers at the airport and found out that they were all going to the same city. I was able to cut the cost of transportation from $25 to $7 while making friends. #winning

Use Public Transportation

In many cities, public transportation offers convenient and cost-effective ways to reach the city center from the airport. Look for information desks or kiosks upon arrival, where you can inquire about the nearest train or bus stations. Public transportation not only saves money but also allows you to experience the local commute and get a glimpse of the city during the journey. Additionally, use google maps to customize transportation options such as taxi, busses, walking, or any combinations of these. See below:

Ride-Sharing Apps

In many destinations, ride-sharing apps have become popular and provide a reliable and often cheaper alternative to traditional taxis. Research and download local ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Lyft. These apps usually provide fare estimates, convenience, and a safer experience compared to hailing a taxi on the spot.

Rent a vehicle

Before you search popular car rental companies such as Hertz or Enterprise, explore if Turo is available in your city (this is the Airbnb for cars). Factors to consider are if you renting a vehicle are the number of days in the new city, comfortability driving in a new city, number of passengers are present, and the overall cost. In one of my trips to Miami, I was able to rent a BMW sedan for $55/day. At the same time, Hertz was offering an economic sedan for $85/day.

Ultimate Taxi Hack

This next hack is a cheat code to avoid paying high prices. In my last trip to Los Angeles, as I was getting ready to take an Uber to my hotel 30 minutes away, I noticed a charge of $85. Next, I noticed a Hertz transportation bus approach, picking up passengers to take them to the Hertz office for free. As I arrived at the Hertz office (4 minutes away), I noticed that the price for the Uber dropped to $45.

As this article is being written, I decided to check prices from Los Angeles Airport to a Marriott 16 minutes away. Next, I checked the price from the Airport Hertz office (3 minutes away) to the same Marriott. Below is the list of findings:

By planning ahead and exploring alternative options, you can avoid paying high prices for airport transportation. Whether it’s using public transportation, pre-booking transfers, sharing rides, or researching local taxi fares, these tips will help you save money while ensuring a smooth and hassle-free journey from the airport to your destination. Travel smart, stay informed, and enjoy the savings!
