Back in 2018, I took my first solo trip. This was a spontaneous decision with a one day preparation but I was willing to risk it. I had a few days off from work so I told myself, what is there to lose? Right?
Despite recession fears, tourist spending is expected to grow in 2023″ (Source: Bloomberg Finance L.P.).
As tourism increases worldwide, so does the increase of individuals embarking on a solitary journeys across the globe. However, there are many important factors to consider when traveling alone.
Research and planning
Research the area where you will be visiting. Some areas might not be suitable for tourist as it may be too dangerous. Additionally, make sure you follow cultural norms and local laws. What might be considered normal in the U.S., might have a negative connotation abroad.
Safety precautions
Do not tell others that you are traveling alone. Even among other tourists, solo travelers are vulnerable as they are not reporting to anyone throughout the day.
Do not be distracted with your phone or your belongings. In one of my adventures in Peru, I was having breakfast with a group of friends. We went to what appeared to be a nice and safe restaurant. Next, my friend decided to hang her purse on the chair. After we ate, we decided to all pay the bill and this was when my friend noticed that someone had snatched her purse. We were a group of 4 and none of us had noticed anything. This is an example to always be watchful at all times.
Do not take the first offer from street vendors
When I was in Colombia, I would get approached by street vendors constantly trying to sell me a product. At first, I engaged in a small talk and after a consideration, I would opt to not buy the product. However, they would find ways to persuade you (almost in a harassing manner), where it gets to the point where you accept the offer.
However, as a frequent traveler, I would always try to bargain prices. Sometimes, street vendors might try to scam you. They are expert sellers and will try to find ways for you to buy their product. What has worked for me is a very simple phrase: “I only have (insert here any amount of money that is enough for a cab or bus ticket) with me”. Make sure to use a serious tone of voice and stay firm with your statement. Sometimes it is okay to ignore them and continue about your way (I know this is rude but if you engage in a minimal conversation, they will follow you until you buy their product).
Lock your belongings
Remember, you are alone in a new territory. Whether you are staying at a hostel or a hotel, lock your belongings because you don’t know who else has access to the place you are staying.
Traveling with valuables and overpacking
Is it necessary to take bring very valuable items on your next expedition solo? The answer depends on you and how long you will be traveling for. My best recommendation is to only take what’s necessary. Even when traveling for a few weeks, you can fill your belongings in a backpack and a carry on. It is easy to find a place to do your laundry abroad. If you will be on constant move during your journey, you will find that packing light is necessary.
Making connections
Earlier on, I did mention that you should not be disclosing that you are traveling alone and need to be mindful of information you give about yourself to other tourists or locals. However, I do recommend to connect with the locals and other tourists to engage in group activities. Make sure to report to someone where you are going throughout the day. I find it helpful to share location with your closest friends temporarily.
Health and risky activities
Whether your travel is for leisure or work, do not neglect your health. If you are having pain or other symptoms, seek medical advice. Additionally, stay hydrated at all times. Change in climate can cause temporary sickness.
Never leave your drink unattended. This is specially true if you decided to enjoy the night activities. Not everyone you encounter will have good intentions. Having said this, if you decide to go for drinks, know your limits. Being intoxicated can make you an easy target for others trying to take advantage of you.
lastly, solo travel provides an opportunity for self-reflection and self-discovery. By navigating unfamiliar environments alone, individuals gain a deeper understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, and personal preferences. It fosters a sense of independence and self-reliance as one learns to make decisions and overcome challenges on their own. Considering the key points mentioned in the article, will ensure you that your next adventure would be filled with only positive memories.
